B'Elanna left Starfleet Corps of Engineers after a stormy career because she couldn't control balance the two sides of herself. She later joined the Maquis and served under Chakotay. She is extremely bright and under Chakotay's suggestion and after Janeway could be sure of her abilities she became Chief Engineer of the ship.
