Tom Paris is a former Starfleet officer who had problems because
he lied during a hearing. He then joined the Maquis as a pilot and served
under Chakotay for a while. He was captured on his first mission and sentanced
to rehab in New Zealand. Janeway had him released from rehab to help
locate the Maquis ship. His father, Admiral Paris, holds him in disdain.
He is struggling with his own self-esteem and impressed Janeway enough
to make him a CONN officer. He comes from a family
of distingushed Starfleet officers. Several of his family
members were admirals including his great-grandfather, grandmother, father
and aunt.
