Chakotay is originally from the Native American
tribe that settled near the Cardassian border, in the DMZ. He follows
many of their traditions including carrying a medicine bundle and a spirit
guide that often advises him. He completed Starfleet Academy and raised
to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on the U.S.S. Merrimac. When
his people were attacked he left Starfleet and joined the Maquis soon after
it was formed. He was Captain of the Maquis ship until after it was taken
into the Delta Quadrent by the caretaker and then destroyed.
Once on Voyager he was made First Officer of the joint crews. He respects
Janeways ideals because she believes in the lives of her crew.
